         After Garret recovered from the exhaustion, he got on his feet and went to the HQ as Salazar instructed. When he arrived at the staging ground, Val was already there with Salazar.       

        They took Garret inside and showed him a secret compartment underground, filled with advanced laboratories, cutting edge technologies and many scientists working in their hazmat suits.

Garret was astonished at the sight he’s beholding, what he saw before him is another unknown side of the village he’s lived in for the past few years.

   “So…..you guys have this lab up and running since when?”

         Garret asked Salazar, his eyes was still fixed on the unbelievably advanced technology before him.

        “Well, we had this set up since the very beginning actually, I told you before that this village was just a front didn’t I? Each and every villager here were people who had ties with the Enlightenment Project and had been on the run from them."

        "I see, but where did you find them? Are they all from the same facility?"

        "You can say that, after all, I met up with some of these people a long time ago when we escaped from one of their facilities. Then we started raiding more facilities and more joined our cause, we eventually came together and found our base here. Then we built this underground HQ and planted a small village just outside.  From that point on, we posed ourselves as moon-worshipping cultists in order to escape from the E.P. agents. The village served as a perfect cover and with the cloaking device concealing our energy spike, we never got any trouble from them.

        “That figures, I’ve always wondered why those bastards couldn’t find us sitting around so close to their base. But how exactly did you fuel such large compartment? There’s got to be a huge ass generator somewhere around here too, right? ”

         “I won’t really call it a generator, it’s more like a raw power source, let me show you, follow me”

       Salazar led Garret further into the HQ, to their mysterious energy source that kept the village running for years.

       As they reached the power core below the HQ, Garret was surprised at the sight of a big tank containing a flowing black liquid before him. There were many tubes connecting the tank to power outlets and there were many scientists in hazmat suits attending to the tank. 

         “What the hell is that…..thing”

        “You could say that it's our energy source, we use this tank of liquid to fuel our village’s electricity and many equipment, including the cloaking device and signal disrupter which kept the E.P. agents from locating us for years."

         "Where on Earth did you find this stuff? And wait a sec…..did you build all these labs by yourselves?" 

        "No, the labs were here in the beginning, there was enough foundation and groundwork for us to build on and this thing here was already in this tank when we found it." 

         “Well.....does it have a name?”

         “Not officially……but people call it Mordevenom. The name kinda fits its menacing looks and we ran with it. You and Val can go have a look around this place; I need to set something up first.”

         Salazar walked away toward another room, leaving Garret and Val in the lab with other scientists.

        Garret got curious about the black fluid inside the tank, something about it rubbed him the wrong way.  He walked to the tank, but Val quickly kept him away from it.

        “Whoa, easy there hotshot, this thing here is dangerous, and highly unstable, it’ll outright kill any living things that come in touch within five minutes ”

         “Yikes…..okay, scary black fluid…..but what does this thing actually do? You know, aside from killing things. I find it hard to imagine how this wobbly black fluid can power the whole village for so long. What do you guys know about it?”

        "Well, from the data we gathered from years ago, this thing here turned out to be the main component for the genetic splicing procedure, the kind that dissolves your tissue to the molecular level and allow the scientists to inject new genes inside. It also gives out specific electricity readings, the kind that speaks “limitless power source”.  Suffice to say, this thing is inside each and every test subject that ever existed.

      “So this thing is what they gave to you when you were at their facility?”

       “No….not in this form, I think they distilled this venom with some other agents to make it less lethal, but each and every test subject at least has this thing inside their body.             

      “This dangerous, genetic splicing, electrical feedback emitting…thing, is in my body? But I don’t remember anyone giving me this thing before. How about you? Did you remember how they gave this thing to you?”

      “Me and Ringo were exposed to this thing since we were initiated to their facility at a young age, less than five years old……right when we were kidnapped along with other children.”

       “Five? How would a five year-old girl be of use to them? What happened back then?“

       “Well, they said that before the age of five, the human body is most resilient to alien substance, those eggheads at the facility…they injected us with a lot of it. Most of us died in the bonding process, but the surviving ones are infused with the ability to resist any diseases and the venom gave us the foundation of our power…..Then they throw us into an operating table and spliced our genes.  That was how the first generation, the Beastmen were created, including me and my sister.”

        Val's voice was cracking, she stopped talking suddenly and turned away to take a deep breath.

       “I didn’t know it was that bad. Val, I didn’t mean to….”

       “It’s okay; I’m already past that point of my life. At least I’m not dead and that’s enough to make me smile.”

     “Val….are you okay?”

      “Oh come on, I’m not a crybaby anymore.   Now, the Elementalists on the other hand, don’t have as much of this venom inside their body like I do, because most of them, including you, were initiated after the age of 5.   And by then it would be too lethal to infuse it directly as we did, so the eggheads came up with other options."

      "Let me guess....the stabilizer shots"

      "Yes, somehow they managed to create an even more distilled version of this stuff and called it stabilizer shots,  which will introduce the venom into your body through your bloodstream gradually until you can fully adapt to it. The process is far less painful but in order to stay alive, you need to take the shot on a regular basis.”

      “So…how could I have lived for so long with no signs of organ failure unit now?”

      “Well, seeing that you've been deprived of the shots since your escape, but the side effects only showed up after you call down lightning bolts, I think it has something to do with using powers. So, in order to keep you from dying, we're going to inject you directly with this thing, and from what Salazar gathered, if you take enough doses, your power would be even more efficient.”

      “So let me get this straight....you’re going to inject me with this stuff?…….Wait, isn’t it going to kill me? Like……you just said that it is dangerous to infuse it after 5…..and you said it yourself, you don’t have any components to make a legit stabilizer shots here”

     “Well I figured that the shots originally came from this thing, if you take a little controlled dose from it, maybe your immune system can slowly adjust to this thing like I did. Look, I know this sound like a bad idea…but this is the only way we could save your life. Otherwise you will die from the rejection, and I must say, it is not a very good way to go.”

     Garret glared at the flowing pitched-black venom; it looked as if it was alive. He felt something in his stomach…...a bad sensation. Somehow he had a feeling that if he accept the venom into his body, everything he knew about the world will change.

    He stared at the venom for some time, thinking about what the possibilities could be. Will he be able to protect his friends? Will he be able to avenge the death of his father and fellow test subjects? Or will he die outright, unable to do anything. Val walked up to him; she holds his hand and look at him in his eyes.

              “This is the only thing we could do for you Garret, without the venom you will die, so make your decision. And know that no matter what you do, I won’t think any less of you.”

        Garret remained in silence for a while, thinking about the people he could never save, how it could have been different if he had the power to save them.  As he was about to decide, an alarm sounded, Salazar rushed out of the other room, he opened the door and see the village under attack by militias. Their insignia confirmed their identity; they are the E.P. assault team.

       "Salazar!! what's going on!!?" 

        “They found us, when the cloaking device was fried, they must have detected the venom's energy spike. Everyone, pack up your things and get out there, we have to keep the villagers safe. I’m going to seal this bulk shut until Garret can get the venom inside his body, Val, you stay with him and keep safe, I’ll be back shortly.”

         Salazar swiftly picked up his rifle and rushed out to help the villagers. Garret made the decision right then, in order to defend the village and his friends, he must have the venom inside him. He approached the tank and opened the hatch. He was about to dip himself in it when Val pulled him away from the tank.

         “What’re you doing? Didn’t you want me to take the venom?”

         “Oh for the love of....not like this you idiot!! Here, take this cylinder, draw the venom out from the tank then inject a small part of it into your bloodstream and you should be fine. The venom in small quantity would give you temporary power boost with little side effect.  You can’t take the whole thing inside you right away, it will outright kill you, or worse, turn you into a monster.”

         “Wouldn't it be more helpful if I just take all of it? You said it yourself, this thing is going to make me more powerful, and I need that power to help everyone.”

        “Argh!! It wouldn’t help us at all if you just die from the rejection now would it?!! Think about it for a while you blockhead!! I mean, sure, if you managed to survive the bonding process you would be powered up like never before, but what if you couldn’t take it? Everything we did until now would be for nothing!! And didn't you listen to me at all? anything that come in direct contact with this thing will be disintegrated!!  So please take it easy…….these people need you alive. I need you alive.”

        Garret paused for a while, then he accepted Valora’s idea;

         “Alright, gimme that, I’ll follow you after I finish up here, go help Salazar and the others.”

        Val hesitated; she couldn’t leave Garret alone, not knowing what the side effect might be. She’s worried if he’d overexert himself with the venom. Garret noticed her hesitation and told her to join the fight.

      “GO! I’ll be fine. Salazar and the others need you more than I do!!”

       “You better be, or I’ll come after you even if you’re already dead!!”

      She finally left the room in haste with rifle in her hands. Garret turned his attention to the pitched black venom in front of him.  

       Garret slowly approach the venom filled tank, he opened its hatch carefully and extracted a small amount of it into the cylinder Val gave to him. He stares at the moving blackfluid inside the cylinder with disgust, but eventually indtroduced it into his body through his veins.

He can feel something moving through his right arm in a swift motion toward his shoulder, but there was no such pain as Val described, there’s no visible tissue disintegrated from his body. Instead, hat he felt was a sudden rush in his body, and he suddenly felt better than ever as if he was reborn again.

Garret slowly lifts his hands up and noticed small streams of dark liquid flowing inside. The venom quickly flowed to the injection point and closed the small wound in an instant.

Garret was in awe at the venom's ability, he suddenly came to realize that the inherent venom inside him was what actually fixed his ribcages back in the forest.                   Amused at the power of the venom, Garret was about to take another injection when he heard a big explosion outside.

        He tried to open the bulk but noticed that Val has shut it completely from the outside. Garret looked around for the way out but found nothing.

        However, he noticed a small monitor attached to the wall and opened it. The screen flashed and showed only static at first, and then the disturbing sounds started to play; 

      "Move!! Get the wounded away from this area!!" 

      "Salazar!! Salazar!! Do you copy? We need help at the village, they're taking the kids away!!"

      "Get out!! We need to get out now!! They're coming!!   

      "What are these things!!?! No...no!!!"

       "Get them away!! Get them a....."

        Garret was shocked at the sight he's beholding, his village and friends are being slaughtered by an army of disfigured humanoid soldiers.

        He looked around the room furiously, trying to find Salazar and Val in the screen, but he couldn't see them anywhere.

        Garret tried to open the bunker's door with his lightning bolt but nothing came out of his hands, not even a slight static. He looked at his hands and didn’t see the venom inside anymore, his hands were normal as if it wasn't infused with any venom.

      Garret was puzzled, he quickly looked at the monitor again and found Val fighting for her life along with Salazar, who's holding Ringo in his arms. They were being cornered by the same disfigured soldiers that's attacked the village.

      He stared at the monitor without even blinking as the soldiers closes in on Val.  Suddenly, another explosion sounded just outside the bunker and the feed was cut.     

 

      He tried to get the screen working again, but whatever caused the monitor to cease its function, it has to be fixed from the outside. Garret decided right then that he couldn't delay any longer and jumped into the venom tank without any hesitation     

      The inside of the tank was cold, colder than anything he has ever touched, the water inside kept him afloat and the room was big enough for him to move around and adjust himself.

      Suddenly, the Venom suddenly moved, it embraced Garret and flowed through him softly. Garret could feel the thick dark liquid entering his body through his skin, but somehow it did not hurt him or disintegrate his tissue like Val said it would. Instead,  he can feel the same rush he felt when he injected the small dose of it into his bloodstream minutes ago, but this time it was more intense. Garret felt his heart rushing like never before, he felt as if he was reborn again, the venom was like a missing piece of puzzle that completes him perfectly.

      Garret could feel the power of electricity flowing through his whole body as more of the venom entered him, in a short period of time, the venom was depleted, leaving only an ample amount of water that kept him afloat inside the tank.

      Garret tried to move, but suddenly, an excruciating pain ran through his body, the pain was very intense that it paralyzed him. Garret closed his eyes from the pain for what seemed like eternity then he felt the pain slowly drifts away.

      When the pain was fully gone, he tried to move, but he realized the only body parts he could control was his eyes.   

      Garret looked around, trying to find the monitor, when he finally got the sight of the it again, the screen was showing the picture of Val limping toward the bunker he's in. She was injured in her right leg and losing blood.

      He panicked, and tried to force a movement on his body but he couldn't feel anything. He slowly looked at his body and found it intact, but to his horror, he noticed a lot of his blood leaving his body through his skin.

      Garret couldn't feel any pain, but the sight alone horrified him. In time, the water inside the tank was filled with red, and the last thing Garret heard before he lost all consciousness was the sound of the bulk opening and a loud scream from Val......

        แกเร็ตลุกขึ้นจากเตียงห้องพยาบาลในวันรุ่งขึ้นและมุ่งหน้าไปยังศูนย์ปฎิบัติการหลักตามที่ซาลาซาร์สั่งทันทีที่เขาพร้อม เมื่อเขาไปถึง วาลและซาลาซาร์นั้นใด้รอเขาอยู่แล้วที่จุดนัดพบ

        ทั้งสองคนพาตัวแกเร็ตเข้าไปที่ฐานห้องลับใต้ดินที่เต็มไปด้วยอุปกรณ์วิทยาศาสตร์ล้ำสมัยและเหล่านักวิทยาศาสตร์ที่กำลังทดลองอยู่ในชุดกันสารเคมีอันตรายร้ายแรง แกเร็ตรู้สึกทึ่งกับสิ่งที่เขาเห็นตรงหน้า สิ่งที่เขาเห็นนี้คืออีกมุมหนึ่งที่เขาไม่เคยเห็นมาก่อนเป้นมุมมองที่แปลกตาจากหมู่บ้านที่เขาอาศัยอยู่มาเป็นเวลาหลายปีที่ผ่านมาอย่าสิ้นเชิง

         “ไอ้แล็ปพวกนี้นี่......สร้างกันมาตั้งแต่เมื่อไหร่เนี่ย?”

        แกเร็ตถามซาลาซาร์ขณะที่นัยน์ตาทั้งสองนั้นจับจ้องอยู่ที่เทคโนโลยีที่ล้ำสมัยจนเสมือนฝันไปตรงหน้าเขา

         “ก็สร้างขึ้นตั้งแต่ตอนแรกเริ่มเลยล่ะนะ ฉันก็เคยบอกเธอไปแล้วว่าหมู่บ้านข้างนอกน่ะเป็นแค่ฉากบังหน้า แล้วทุกคนในหมู่บ้านนี้ต่างก็มีส่วนเกี่ยวข้องกับองกรณ์แห่งการรู้แจ้งทั้งนั้น

ไม่ใช่เหรอ?"

        "อ่า....จริงด้วยสินะ ว่าแต่นายไปเจอคนพวกนี้ที่ไหนล่ะ ทุกคนในหมู่บ้านเนี่ยมาจากที่เดียวกันหมดเลยหรือเปล่า"

        " ถ้าจะว่าอย่างนั้นก็ไม่ผิดหรอกนะ ฉันพบกับคนพวกนี้ส่วนใหญ่ก็ตอนที่หนีออกมาจากฐานใหญ่ของพวกองกรณ์นั่นแหล่ะ พอหนีออกมาแล้ว พวกเราก็รวบรวมกำลังไปบุกฐานของเจ้าพวกนั้นจนกระทั่งเรามีกำลังมากพอที่จะร่วมมือกันสร้างฐานตรงนี้ขึ้นเป็นศูนย์บัญชาการ แล้วพวกเราก็ปลูกหมู่บ้านเอาไว้รอบๆที่นี่ หลังจากนั้นพวกเราก็แสร้งทำเป็นพวกกลุ่มบูชาพระจันทร์เพื่อหนีจากพวกนั้น หมู่บ้านแห่งนี้เป็นเสมือนฉากบังหน้าที่สมบูรณ์แบบ และด้วยเครื่องพรางตัวกับเครื่องรบกวนคลื่นตรวจจับทั้งหลายนี่ เราเลยสามารถปกปิดตัวตนของพวกเราและหนีจากปัญหาจากพวกมันใด้มาจนถึงตอนนี้ไงหล่ะ” 

        “มิน่าล่ะ ผมก็นั่งนึกอยู่ตั้งนานว่าทำไมไอ้พวกนั้นมันถึงหาเราไม่เจอทั้งที่พวกเราก็อยู่ใกล้กับฐานของพวกมันขนาดนี้ แต่พวกนายไปหาพลังงานจากไหนมาใช้เนี่ย? มันต้องมีเครื่องปั่นไฟขนาดตัวเป้งๆ อยู่แถวนี้ชัวร์เลยใช่มะ"

        “ก็นะ แต่ฉันไม่ได้เรียกมันว่าเครื่องปั่นไฟหรอก มันเหมือนกับแหล่งพลังงานดิบมากกว่า ตามมาสิ ฉ้นจะชี้ให้ดู”

        ซาลาซาร์นำแกเร็ตเข้าไปยังด้านในของฐานเพื่อสำรวจดูแหล่งหลังงานปริศนาที่คอยมอบพลังไฟฟ้าให้กับหมู่บ้านมาเป็นเวลานับปี

        เมื่อพวกเขามาถึงยังศูนย์รวมพลังงานของฐานลับ แกเร็ตก็ได้แต่ตะลึงกับภาพแทงค์น้ำขนาดยักษ์ที่เต็มไปด้วยของเหลวสีดำตรงหน้าเขา ตัวแทงค์น้ำมีท่อหลากหลายต่ออยู่และเดินต่อไปยังเหล่านักวิทยาศาสตร์ในชุดป้องกันสารเคมี

         “ไอ้นั่นมันคือ.....อะไร....”

        “เธอจะเรียกไอ้ของเหลวในถังนั่นเป็นฐานพลังงานของหมู่บ้านเราก็ได้ พวกเราต่อสายจากแทงค์นี้ไปยังแหล่งพลังงานไฟฟ้าของหมู่บ้านและอุปกรณ์ต่างๆ รวมถึงเครื่องพรางตัว แล้วก็เครื่องรบกวนคลื่นตรวจจับด้วย มันเป็นตัวคอยกันพวกหน่วยรบพิเศษของพวกนั้นไม่ให้ระบุที่ตั้งของเรามาเป็นปีเลยหล่ะนะ”

        “แล้วนี่คุณไปหาของพวกนี้มาจากส่วนไหนของโลกเนี่ย? หรือว่าคุณสร้างแลปนี้ขึ้นมาด้วยตัวเองเลย?”

        “ไม่หรอก..... ไอ้พวกห้องแล็ปทั้งหลายเนี่ยมันมีอยู่ที่นี่มาตั้งแต่แรกแล้ว พวกเราก้แค่เติมส่วนขยายให้มันสมบูรณ์ขึ้นแค่นั้นเอง แล้วไอ้ของเหลวสีดำนั่นก็อยู่ในแทงค์น้ำตั้งแต่ครั้งแรกที่เราพบมันแล้วด้วย”

        “เอ่อ..... แล้วมันมีชื่อเรียกมั้ยอ่ะ?”

        "เอาจริงๆแล้วก็ไม่มีชื่อเป็นทางการอะไรหรอกนะ แต่ทุกคนเรียกที่นี่มันว่า "พิษมรณะ" ชื่อมันเข้ากับสภาพหน้าตาน่ากลัวของมัน แล้วเราก็ไม่เคยคิดเปลี่ยนเป็นอย่างอื่นด้วย เราเลยเรียกมันว่าอย่างนั้นมาตลอดน่ะ เธอกับวาลอร่าเดินดูรอบๆ ไปก่อนก็ได้ ฉันต้องไปเตรียมการอะไรเพิ่มเติมนิดหน่อยก่อนแล้วค่อยว่ากันอีกที”

        ซาลาซาร์เดินจากไปยังห้องถัดไป ทิ้งแกเร็ตกับวาลไว้ในห้องทดลองกับบรรดานักวิทยาศาสตร์คนอื่น

        แกเร็ตนึกรู้สึกสงสัยตงิดใจกับของเหลวสีดำในแทงค์น้ำนั้นไม่น้อย มีบางอย่างเกี่ยวกับมันที่ทำให้เขารู้สึกไม่ไสบายใจ เขาเดินไปหามันแต่กลับถูกวาลฉุดรั้งเอาไว้อย่างรวดเร็ว

        “เดี๋ยวก่อนนายคนใจร้อน ไอ้เจ้าน้ำดำนั่นมันอันตรายและไม่สเถียรมากนะเฮ้ย  อย่าไปแตะมันสุ่มสี่สุ่มห้าเข้าหล่ะ เพราะมันจะทำลายทุกสิ่งมีชีวิตที่มันสะมผัสภายในห้านาที”

        “อึ๋ย..โอเค...ไอ้ของเหลวสีดำนี่มันน่ากลัวจริงๆแหละ....แต่เจ้านี่มันทำอะไรได้อีกรึเปล่า นอกจากที่เธอว่ามา เพราะฉันไม่คิดว่าไอ้ของเหลวที่ลอยตัวไปมานี่มันจะให้พลังงานได้ถึงขนาดนั้น นี่เธอรู้อะไรเกี่ยวกับมันมากกว่านี้รึเปล่า?”

        “ก็นะ จากข้อมูลที่เรารวบรวมเมื่อหลายปีที่แล้ว เจ้านี่มันเป็นส่วนผสมหลักในการดัดแปลงดีเอนเอของพวกองค์กรรู้แจ้งน่ะ มันก็สามารถละลายเนื้อเยื่อของพวกเราไปถึงระดับโมเลกุลเพื่อให้นักิทยาศาสตร์ฉีดยีนตัวใหม่เข้าไปในร่างกายได้ นอกจากนี้แล้ว ไอ้ก้อนน้ำดำนี่ก็ยังแผ่พลังงานไฟฟ้าออกมาในแบบ “ไม่อั้น” ด้วย พูดง่ายๆเลยก็คือไอ้สิ่งนี้น่ะอยู่ในตัวหนูทดลองทุกๆคนเลยหล่ะนะ”

        "งั้นไอ้นี่ก็คือสิ่งที่พวกนักวิทยาศาสตร์ของไอ้พวกนั้นฉีดใส่พวกเธอสินะ"

        "อ่า ไม่หรอก...ชั้นรู้สึกว่าจะไม่ใช่ในสภาพนี้หรอกนะ เพราะไอ้ที่ชั้นกับริงโกะโดนฉีดใส่มันเป้นแบบที่เจือจางลงแล้วมันจะใด้อันตรายน้อยลง แต่ว่าถึงจะจางลงแล้วหรือไม่ก็ตาม ยังไงหนูทดลองทุกๆคนก้มีไอ้พิษนรกนี่อยู่ในตัวกันทุกคนล่ะนะ"

        "แสดงว่าไอ้พิษสีดำที่สามารถเปลี่ยนโครงสร้างโมเลกุล และปล่อยพลังงานไม่อั้นใด้เนี่ย มันอยู่ในตัวชั้นเรอะ.....เฮ้ย แต่ชั้นไม่เห็นจำใด้เลยว่ามีคนเอาไอ้ของแปลกๆนี่มาใส่ในตัวเลยนะ....แล้วเธอละวาล พอจะจำใด้มั้ยว่าไอ้พวกนั้นมันทำยังไงกับเธอ"

       

        “ฉันกับริงโกะก็โดนไอ้สารนี่แต่ตอนที่พวกเราโดนจับเข้าไปในฐานของพวกมันตอนพวกเราเด็กๆแล้วหล่ะนะ  ตอนอายุประมาณห้าปีมั้ง…..”

        “ห้าขวบหรอ? เด็กห้าขวบนี่จะไปมีประโยชน์อะไรกับพวกมันกัน? เกิดอะไรขึ้นในตอนนั้นงั้นเหรอ?”

       "โอ้ย ก็บอกแล้วไงว่าไม่เป็นไร นี่ชั้นไม่ใช้ลูกเล็กเด็กแดงแล้วนะ เอาเหอะ  พอมาถึงพวกนักแปรธาตุน่ะสิ พวกเขาไม่มีไอ้สารนี่ในตัวเยอะขนาดพวกเราเพราะว่าส่วนใหญ่ รวมถึงตัวนายเองด้วย เข้ารับการผ่าตัดหลังอายุได้ห้าปีแล้ว พวกนักวิทยาศาสตร์นั่นเลยต้องหาทางอื่นมาจนได้"

       "วักซีนสร้างสภาพสเถียรที่เธอพูดถึงตอนนั้นสินะ"

       "ใช่แล้วหล่ะ ไอ้วัคซีนที่จะนำพิษนี่เข้าไปในร่างกายทีละนิดๆและทำให้มันปรับตัวเข้ากับนายได้ ขั้นตอนของมันอาจจะน่ากลัวน้อยกว่าหน่อย แต่ว่ากลายเป็นว่าพวกนักแปรถาตุต้องคอยฉีดวัคซีนนั่นเป็นประจำไม่งั้นก็ซี้ม่องเท่ง"

       "อ้าว....แล้วนี่ชั้นอยู่มาใด้นานขนาดนี้ใด้ไงเนี่ย"

        "ถ้าให้ชั้นคิดละก็.......คงเป็นเพราะว่านายไม่เคยใช้พลังเลยจนกระทั่งเจอไอ้หมีนั่นล่ะมั้ง อาการข้างเคียงคงจะกำเริบต่อเมื่อมีการใช้พลังพอเศษแหละ เพราะฉะนั้น ตอนนี้พวกเราก็เลยต้องรีบฉีดเจ้าพิษมรณะนี่เข้าใส่ตัวนายโดยตรงเลย เพื่อรั้งชีวิตนายไว้ แถมซาลาซาร์ยังบอกอีกด้วยว่าถ้านายคอยฉีดมันเข้าไปเรื่อยๆ พลังของนายจะยิ่งทรงประสิทธิภาพขึ้นไปอีก”

        “เดี๋ยวก่อนนะ…. นี่เธอจะฉีดไอ้เจ้านั่นเข้าไปในตัวผมงั้นหรอ?....... แล้วไอ้นั่นมันจะไม่ฆ่าผมหรอ แบบว่า…...เธอเพิ่งจะบอกไปนะว่ามันอันตรายมากถ้าฉีดเข้าไปหลังห้าขวบ….. แล้วเธอก็ยังบอกด้วยว่าพวกเธอยังไม่มีส่วนผสมที่จะทำวัคซีนนั่นที่นี่”

        แกเร็ตจ้องเขม็งไปยังยาพิษสีดำทมิฬที่กระเพื่อมไปมาเหมือนมีชีวิต ความรู้สึกนั้นทำให้เริ่มปั่นป่วนไม่ไว้วางใจ เขารู้สึกว่าถ้าเขายอมให้สิ่งนี้เข้ามาในร่างของเขา โลกที่เขารู้จักจะต้องถูกเปลี่ยนไปเป็นคนละใบ

        แกเร็ตจ้องถังยาพิษอยู่อย่างนั้นเป็นเวลาครู่หนึ่ง คิดถึงความเป็นไปได้ทั้งหมดที่จะเกิดขึ้นในอนาคต เขาจะปกป้องเพื่อนของเขาได้ไหม? เขาจะแก้แค้นให้การตายของบิดาของเขาและเพื่อนๆเหยื่อทดลองได้ไหม? หรือว่าเขาจะต้องตายโดยที่ไม่ได้ทำอะไรสักอย่าง กระทั่งวาลเดินเข้ามาหาเขา เธอจับมือของเขาและจ้องเขาไปในดวงตาของเขา

        “แกเร็ตไปเงียบอยู่ครู่หนึ่งขณะคิดถึงผู้คนที่เขาจะสามารถช่วยชีวิตเอาไว้ได้ คิดว่ามันจะเป็นอย่างไรถ้าเขามีพลังที่จะสามารถช่วยคนเหล่านั้นได้ แต่ก่อนที่เขาได้สามารถตัดสินใจได้นั้นเสียงสัญญาณป้องกันภัยกลับดังขึ้นพร้อมกับซาลาซาร์ที่วิ่งออกมาจากอีกห้องหนึ่ง ชายหนุ่มเปิดประตูออกและพบกับหมู่บ้านของเขาที่กำลังถูกโจมตีโดยกองทหารบก เหรียญตราบนอกของพวกเขาบ่งบอกว่าเป็นพวกหน่วยรบพิเศษของพวดองกรณ์แห่งการรู้แจ้งนั่นเอง

        “ซาลาซาร์!! เกิดอะไรขึ้น!!?”

        “พวกมันหาเราเจอแล้ว มันต้องตรวจจับคลื่นพลังงานของพิษมรณะได้ตอนที่เครื่องพรางตัวเสียแน่ๆ ทุกคนเก็บของแล้วรีบออกไปจากที่นี่ซะ เราต้องไปช่วยคนในหมู่บ้านให้เร็วที่สุด ฉันจะปิดที่นี่เอาไว้จนกว่าแกเร็ตจะสามารถฉีดไอ้พิษนี่เข้าไปในตัวของเขาได้ ส่วนวาลอร่า เธอคอยอยู่กับเขาแล้วก็ระวังตัวด้วยหล่ะเดี๋ยวฉันกลับมา”

        ซาลาซาร์คว้าปืนไรเฟิลของเขาแล้วพุ่งออกไปช่วยชาวหมู่บ้าน ในตอนนั้นแกเร็ตก็สามารถตัดสินใจได้แล้วเช่นกัน เขาจะต้องฉีดวีน่อมเข้าร่างของเขาเพื่อที่เขาจะได้ไปช่วยชาวบ้านและเพื่อนของเขาได้ แกเร็ตมุ่งหน้าเข้าไปหาแทงค์น้ำและเปิดฝาของมันออก เขาเกือบจะจุ่มตัวลงไปแล้วแต่วาลฉุดเขาเอาไว้ก่อน

        “นี่เธอทำอะไรน่ะ? ไม่ได้อยากให้ฉันเอาไอ้นี่เข้าไปในตัวหรอกเหรอ?”

        “โอ้ย ให้ตายเถอะ…. ไม่ใช่แบบนั้นสิยะตาทึ่ม!! นี่ เอาเข็มนี่ไปแล้ว ตักวีน่อมออกมาแล้วค่อยฉีดมันเข้าไปในตัวสิยะ ถ้าแค่นิดเดียวก็ไม่น่าจะเป็นไรและก็น่าจะช่วยเพิ่มพลังให้เธอได้ครู่นึง นายจะเอาทั้งหมดนั้นยัดเข้าตัวในรอดเดียวไม่ได้หรอก มันจะฆ่านายแน่หรือไม่ก็เปลี่ยนนายเป็นอสูรกาย”

        “แต่มันจะไม่ดีกว่าเหรอถ้าฉันเอามันเข้าไปในตัวทั้งหมดเลยในรอบเดียว เธอพูดเองนะว่าเจ้านี่จะทำให้ฉันแข็งแกร่งขึ้น แล้วฉันก็ต้องการพลังนั่นมาช่วยพวกเราด้วย”

        “แต่มันจะไม่ช่วยหรอกนะถ้านายตายซะก่อน!! คิดหน่อยสิ แหงล่ะ ถ้านายรอดกระบวนการประสานยีนมาได้แล้วมีพลังอย่างท่วมท้นแต่ถ้าหากร่างกายของนายไม่สามารถทนมันได้ล่ะ? ทุกอย่างที่เราทำมาก็จะไร้ความหมายนะ!! ใจเย็นหน่อยสิ……. ทุกคนต้องการนายแบบตัวเป็นๆ นะ ฉันเอง....ฉันเองก็อยากให้นายมีชีวิตอยู่เหมือนกัน”

        แกเร็ตหยุดคิดไปชั่วครู่ก่อนจะยอมรับข้อเสนอของวาล

        “ก็ได้ เอาเข็มนั่นมา เธอไปช่วยซาลาซาร์กับคนอื่นก่อน เดี๋ยวฉันตามไปอีกที”

        วาลลังเลอยู่ชั่วครู่ เธอไม่อยากทิ้งแกเร็ตเอาไว้คนเดียวเพราะผลข้างเคียงที่อาจจะตามมา เธอกลัวว่าเขาจะฉีดพิษร่างกายเกินขนาด แต่แกเร็ตเห็นเธอยืนลังเลจึงรีบไล่เธอไปร่วมแนวต่อสู่

        “ไปสิ! ฉันไม่เป็นอะไรหรอกน่า”

        “เอาให้จริงล่ะ ไม่งั้นฉันจะกลับมาเล่นงานนาย ต่อให้ตายไปแล้วก็เหอะ”

        วาลตัดสินใจออกจากห้องไปอย่างรวดเร็วพร้อมกับปืนซุ่มยิงของเธอในที่สุด ส่วนแกเร็ตก็ใด้หันความสนใจไปสู่ยาพิษมรณะที่อยุ่ตรงหน้าเขา

        แกเร็ตเดินเขาไปหาถังยาพิษอย่างช้าๆและเปิดฝาออกอย่างระมัดระวัง หลังจากนั้น เขาก็นำส่วนเล็กๆของยาพิษใส่ไปในเข็มฉีดยาที่วาลอร่าให้มา และจ้องมองสิ่งที่ขยับอยู่ข้างในอย่างขยะแขยง ท้ายที่สุดแล้ว เขาก็ใด้ฉีดยาพิษมรณะนั่นเข้าไปทางแขนขวาของเขาจนใด้

        แกเร็ตรู้สึกใด้ถึงบางสิ่งที่กำลังแล่นผ่านอยู่ในแขนขวาของเขาอย่างรวดเร็วไปถึงหัวไหล่ แต่เขาไม่ได้รู้สึกถึงความเจ็บปวดที่วาลบอกไว้แม้แต่น้อย  และร่างกายของเขาก็ไม่ได้แตกตัวลงเลยเช่นกัน ทว่า เขากลับรู้สึกใด้ถึงพลังที่เอ่อล้นออกมาจากร่างกาย และรู้สึกดีขึ้นในบัดดล

        เขายกมือของเขาขึ้นมาอย่างช้าๆ และใด้สังเกตุเห็นเส้นเลือดที่เต็มไปด้วยยาพิษสีดำแล่นอยู่ข้างในอย่างเด่นชัด ยาพิษสีดำในมือของเขานั้นได้แล่นอย่างรวดเร็วไปสมานแผลที่เข็มจิ้มเมื่อครู่ที่ผ่านมาเหมือนไม่มีอะไรเกิดขึ้น

        แกเร็ตตกตะลึงไปกับความสามารถของยาพิษมรณะที่เขาด้เห็น และคิดขึ้นมาใด้ว่ายาพิษที่มีอยู่ในตัวของเขาตั้งแต่แรกนั่นเองที่ซ่อมแซมกระดูกซี่โครงของเขาในป่าวันนั้น เขากำลังจะแดสารพิษเข้าไปเพิ่มอีกครั้งจนกระทั่งเขาใด้ยินเสียงระเบิดดังออกมาจากข้างนอกห้องนิรภัย       

        แกเร็ตรีบวิ่งหาทางออกจากที่ๆเขาอยู่ แต่กลับพบว่าวาลอร่าใด้ปิดตายห้องนี้ไว้จากข้างนอกแล้ว แต่ทว่า เมื่อเขาหันมองไปรอบๆห้องนั้น เขาก็ใด้เห็นจอมอนิเตอร์เล็กๆที่ติดอยู่ข้างฝาผนังและใด้เปิดมันขึ้น ในตอนแรกนั้น หน้าจอไม่มีอะไรเลยนอกจากคลื่นรบกวน แต่เมื่อสัญญาณเริ่มดีขึ้น แกเร็ตก็เริ่มใด้ยินเสียงและใด้เห็นภาพที่เขาหวาดกลัวที่สุดอีกครั้ง

        "ไป!! วิ่งไปเร็วๆเข้า!! พาคนเจ็บหนีไป"

        "ซาลาซาร์!! ซาลาซาร์!! ได้ยินมั้ย!! ไอ้พวกบ้านี่กำลังโจมตีหม่บ้านและพาเด็กๆหนีไปแล้ว!! มาช่วยกันหน่อย เร็วๆเข้า!!

        "ไอ้พวกบ้านี่มันอะไรกันเนี่ย!!! เฮ้ย ไม่นะ ไม่!!"

        " เอามันออกไป!! เอามันออก.....!!!"

        แกเร็ตแทบจะไม่เชื่อภาพที่เขาเห็น หมู่บ้านและเพื่อนๆของเขากำลังถูกทำลายลงโดยกองทหารไร้หน้าที่เขาไม่เคยเห็นมาก่อน เขามองไปรอบๆหน้าจออย่างกระวนกระวาย พยายามที่จะหาวาลอร่ากับซาลาซาร์ แต่เขาก้ไม่สามารถหาทั้งสองคนใด้เลย

        แกเร็ตร้อนรนหาทางออกจากห้องแล็บเพื่อที่จะไปช่วยเพื่อนๆของเขาที่ประสบปัญหาอยู่ข้างนอก เขาพยายามปล่อยไฟฟ้าออกจามือเพื่อทำลายประตู แต่กลับไม่มีอะไรเกิดขึ้น ไม่มีแม้แต่ประกายไฟฟ้าหรือความรู้สึกของกระแสไฟฟ้าหลงเหลืออยู่เลย เขามองไปที่มือของเขาและพบว่าสารพิษมรณะนั้นใด้หายไปแล้ว ราวกับว่าเขาไม่เคยใด้ฉีดมันเข้าไปในตัวเลย

        แกเร็ตสับสนอย่างหนัก และเมื่อเขามองไปที่มอนิเตอร์นั้น เขาก็ใด้เห็นวาลอร่ากับซาลาซาร์ที่แบกริงโกะอยู่บนไหล่ของเขาอย่างระมัดระวังกำลังจนตรอกอยู่ โดยพวกกองทหารไร้หน้าที่กำลังโจมตีหมู่บ้านอยู่นั่นเอง

        แกเร็ตจ้องมองที่หน้าจออย่างไม่กระพิบตาในขณะที่พวกกองทหารไร้หน้ากำลังขยับเข้าใกล้วาลอร่าเข้าไปทุกที แต่ทว่าหลังจากเสียงระเบิดอีกลูกดังก้องออกมาจากข้างนอก ภาพก็ใด้ถูกตัดไป

        เขาพยายามที่จะทำให้หน้าจอทำงานอีกครั้ง แต่ทว่าสิ่งที่ทำให้หน้าจอดับไปนั้นต้องซ่อมจาดข้างนอกเท่านั้น แกเร็ตตัดสินใจอย่างเด็ดเดี่ยวในทันทีว่าเขารอไม่ได้อีกต่อไปและกระโดดลงไปในถังเก็บพิษมรณะอย่างรวดเร็ว

        ในถังนั้นเย็นเฉียบ เย็นกว่าทุกๆสิ่งที่แกเร็ตเคยสัมผัสมา น้ำที่อยู่ข้างในนั้นทำให้เขาสามารถลอยตัวขึ้นใด้และตัวถังนั้นก็กว้างขวางพอที่จะให้เขาขยับไปมาได้ตามสะดวก

        ทันใดนั้น พิษมรณะก็ได้ขยับตัวและห่อหุ้มตัวของแกเร็ตไว้ พร้อมกับแล่นผ่านตัวเขาไปอย่างนุ่มนวล แกเร็ตรู้สึกใด้ถึงยาพิษที่กำลังแล่นเข้าสู่ตัวของเขาผ่านผิวหนัง แต่กลับไม่มีความเจ็บปวดใดๆเลย ต่างกับที่วาลอร่าบรรยายไว้ลิบลับ ทว่าเขากลับรู้สึกได้ถึงความรู้สึกของพลังที่กำลังเอ่อล้นออกมาจากร่างกายเหมือนตอนที่ฉีดยาพิษในเข็มเข้าไปเมื่อครู่ แต่คราวนี้นั้นความรู้สึกนั้นรุนแรงกว่าเป็นเท่าตัว เขารู้สึกใด้ถึงจังหวะการเต้นของหัวใจที่รวดเร็วขึ้นแบบไม่เคยเป็นมาก่อน เขารู้สึกเหมือนกับว่ายาพิษมรณะในถังนี้ คือชิ้นส่วนของร่างกายที่ขาดหายไป และเหมือนกับเขาใด้เกิดใหม่อีกครั้ง

        แกเร็ตเริ่มรู้สึกใด้ถึงพลังงานไฟฟ้าที่เอ่อล้นขึ้นมาจากตัวของเขาทุกๆครั้งที่ยาพิษมรณะใด้เข้าไปในกระแสเลือด ในเวลาอันสั้น ยาพิษมรณะก็ใด้หมดลง ทุกๆอณูของมันใด้เข้าไปในตั วแกเร็ตหมดแล้ว เหลือเพียงน้ำเปล่าในถังที่ทำให้เขาลอยตัวอยู่ใด้เท่านั้นเอง

        เขาพยายามขยับตัว แต่ทันใดนั้นเอง  แกเร็ตก้ใด้รู้สึกถึงความเจ็บปวดแสนสาหัสที่ทำให้เขาเป็นอัมพาตุไปชั่วขณะ เขาหลับตาลงด้วยความเจ็บปวดในเวลาที่ยาวนานเปรียบนิรันดร์ 

        เมื่อความเจ็บปวดใด้หายไปอย่างหมดจดแล้ว แกเร็ตก็พยายามที่จะขยับตัวอีกครั้ง แต่กลับกลายเป็นว่าเขาทำใด้แค่มองไปรอบๆห้องเท่านั้นเอง

        แกเร็ตมองไปรอบๆอย่างกระวนกระวายเพื่อหาหน้าจอมอนิเตอร์ เมื่อเขาใด้เห้นมันอีกครั้ง หน้าจอก็กำลังโชว์ภาพของวาลอร่าที่กำลังเดินกะเผลกมาที่ห้องแล็บอย่างเชื่องช้าจากอาการบาดเจ็บที่ขาขวา

        เขาตกใจกับภาพที่เห็นและพยายามฝืนขยับตัวอีกครั้ง แต่ทว่าเขากลับไม่รู้สึกถึงอะไรเลย ไม่แม้แต่สัมผัสผิวของเขา แกเร็ตมองลงดูที่ร่างกายของเขาที่ดูปรกติดีอยู่อย่างงงๆ แต่เขาก็ได้เห็นภาพอันน่าหวาดกลัวของเลือดที่กำลังไหลรินออกจากตัวเขาอย่างรวดเร็ว 

       และถึงแม้ว่าแกเร็ตจะไม่รู้สึกถึงความเจ็บปวดใดๆเลย แต่ภาพที่เขาเห็นก็มากพอที่จะทำให้เขาเริ่มคุมสติไม่อยู่ ในเวลาอันสั้นนั้นน้ำใสๆในถังก็เริ่มแดงฉานไปด้วยเลือดในร่างกายของเขาอย่างน่าสยดสยอง สิ่งสุดท้ายที่แกเร็ตได้ยินก่อนจะหมดสติไปคือเสียงของประตูที่เปิดออก และเสียงกรีดร้องของวาลอร่านั่นเอง......
