Myanmar National League Explained: Clubs, Format and Players to Watch

The Myanmar National League, usually shortened to MNL , is the top tier of club football in Myanmar. If you follow Myanmar football from abroad, or you simply want to know why Shan United and Yangon United dominate the headlines, this guide covers the essentials. Every season fact below describes the 2025-26 campaign , which finished on 18 March 2026 with Shan United lifting the trophy.

What the Myanmar National League Is and When It Started

The MNL launched in 2009 as a nationwide professional competition. It replaced the Myanmar Premier League, a Yangon-based league in which most clubs were tied to government ministries. The new league began with eight professional clubs representing different regions, and Yadanarbon FC from Mandalay became its first champion. Within a few years the field grew to twelve clubs, and the Myanmar Football Federation (MFF) still oversees the competition today.

The league has not run without interruption. The 2021 season was canceled after the military coup, which is why 2025-26 was only the 16th completed season in MNL history.

How the Myanmar National League Season and Format Work

Twelve clubs face each other twice, once at home and once away. That adds up to 22 matches per club and 132 league matches in a full season. A win earns three points, a draw earns one, and a loss earns none. When clubs finish level, tiebreakers such as goal difference and head-to-head record separate them.

Promotion and relegation connect the MNL to the second tier, MNL-2. The bottom two clubs go down each year, and two MNL-2 sides come up. The champion also earns a place in the group stage of the AFC Challenge League, Asia's third-tier club competition. Calendars change from year to year: the 2025-26 season ran from 15 August 2025 to 18 March 2026, while the 2024-25 season ran from July 2024 to March 2025.

The Big Clubs of the Myanmar National League

Only three clubs have ever won the title, and all three have strong identities.

Shan United are the benchmark. The club is based in Taunggyi, plays at the 7,000-capacity Taunggyi Stadium, and began life as Kanbawza FC before taking its current name in 2015. Shan United have won a record seven titles (2017, 2019, 2020, 2022, 2023, 2024-25 and 2025-26). Their latest triumph came without a single defeat, with 18 wins and 4 draws. Han Win Aung took over as head coach in November 2025.

Yangon United are the closest challenger. Founded in 2007 as Air Bagan and renamed in 2009, the club owns five titles (2011, 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2018) and plays at the Yangon United Sports Complex. In 2025-26 they finished runner-up, just one point behind Shan United, and lost only once all season. Their 9-0 win at Dagon Port on 19 October 2025 was the biggest result of the campaign.

Yadanarbon won the very first MNL title in 2009 and have four titles in total, the latest in 2016. The Mandalay side finished seventh in 2025-26.

Beyond the champions, Dagon Star United of Yangon took third place with 39 points, the best finish among the chasing pack. Hantharwady United of Bago ended fifth and remain one of the league's founding-era clubs, with a runner-up finish in 2020.
