And that changes the proposition for people, making it more useful and usable. But first, let's talk about some problems. The iPhone 3G had me worried the first week because of its thirsty battery consumption. I was running out of juice by mid afternoon on the first several days, which prompted me to carry my recharging plug everywhere I went. I wondered if it was the fact that I was constantly getting my Exchange email pushed out to me that was causing the battery woes. But about a week later, the phone seemed to settle down and manage its power consumption much more efficiently. I was able to get a full day's charge on most every day though asking it to go two days straight is, well, asking for trouble. The iPhone 3G is a victim of its own success in some ways. I've learned all the tricks about how to conserve power like turning off your radios when you're not using them, turning down the screen brightness and what not. What I think would be great is a power save application right on the home page that allows you to choose all these settings and keep them in place right up until the time you need the phone to spring to life. You can turn the phone onto airplane mode right from the settings menu, which sort of accomplishes some of the task, but it also kills your ability to make and receive calls. To do those things manually takes a number of clicks, which seems burdensome and unnecessary. One other battery-related issue: I found on a couple of occasions when the battery meter appeared high and didn't reflect the real state of my battery, which was getting close to empty. The other major issue I've found is the 3G coverage can be spotty and inconsistent. There are times when the iPhone 3G jumps back between EDGE and 3G and that's even when you're standing completely still. This didn't present many problems for phone calls as some people have reported, but it made the Internet experience less fulfilling occasionally and downright irritating sometimes. AT&T is still building out its 3G network and the coverage maps suggest it's made a lot of progress. But there were plenty of times when I was almost certain that I should be getting 3G service, even in parts of downtown Chicago where I was traveling and all I see is EDGE service. The Sprint phone that I also carried didn't have as many coverage limitations. There may be some fine tuning AT&T and Apple need to do to make sure the iPhone 3G works optimally on AT&T's network.
