The speed of a hummingbird’s wings when it is flying is also very impressive. Different species have different hummingbird wing speed. The number of wing beats goes up with the size of the species.

The Giant hummingbird, which is the biggest species of hummingbird, flaps its wings 12 times per second. In Cuba, the smallest hummingbird, the Bee hummingbird, is capable of flapping its wings 80 times in a second.

Most hummingbirds that visit North America are in the middle of the range. The Ruby-throated hummingbird, for instance, flaps its wings about 50 times per second. And the Rufous hummingbird’s wings beat about 52 to 62 times per second, which is a bit faster.

During courtship displays, some species flap their wings even faster than others. Scientists use high-speed photography to record things that move too fast for the human eye to see.
