อ่านบทความตามต้นฉบับ อ่านบทความเฉพาะข้อความThere are definitely serious issues in the game, and with fans growing increasingly antsy about Blizzard's apparent inability to solve them, community manager D2R Items has released a lengthy forum post explaining what's gone wrong, the steps being taken to fix it, how they're going in the wake of it, and how it could take a while to get things fully sorted."
The morning of Saturday Pacific time we experienced an outage worldwide due to an abrupt, massive increase in traffic" PezRadar explained. "This was a new level that our servers hadn't previously experienced or even prior to the launch. The issue was made worse by an update that we implemented earlier in the day in order to improve performance for game creation. The two factors together overloaded our global database that caused it to take a long time to load out."
To ease the burden, Blizzard rolled back the Friday update, but that solution was not enough. A larger rush of traffic caused another delay on Sunday.
The same thing happened on Monday as Blizzard implemented fixes to Diablo 2's backup database and then tried to move it onto the new database. Once the switch was completed, the database continued to run backup processes, but it was not able to handle queries from servers located elsewhere.
The issue was resolved on Tuesday, but another high concurrent player count that also occurred that day led to "degraded performance of databases," which database engineers are still working to fix. The issue is so serious it is that the Diablo 2: Resurrected team has roped in engineers from other parts of Blizzard to fix minor issues, while focusing its attention exclusively on "core Server issues."
"We also reached out to our third-party partners to offer assistance and assistance," PezRadar said.
It is interesting to note that Blizzard's wish to preserve the authenticity of the Diablo 2 experience in the remake is the main cause of all the issues. One "legacy service" in particular handles critical functions including "game creation/joining, updating/reading/filtering game lists, verifying game server health, and reading characters from the database."
It was updated and optimized to work with Diablo 2: Resurrected but it's still rooted in 20-year-old tech, and it's having trouble being up-to date "modern game play."
"In 2001 it was not as much content on web about learning how to play Diablo 2 'correctly' (Baal is available for XP and Pindleskin/Ancient Sewers/etc to the magic find, etc)," PezRadar said. "Today it is, however, that a new player can look up many amazing content creators who can instruct players how to play the game in different ways.
A lot of them involve a lot of database load, in the form of creating loading, destroying, and creating games all in a short time. While we knew this was possible--with players creating fresh characters on new servers, working tirelessly to locate their magical objects--we significantly underestimated the amount of information we discovered from the beta testing."
Another major issue is the frequentity of database saves across the world, that are occurring way frequently without any good reason. Blizzard has made some adjustments to ease things up for now and is also in the process of implementing a permanent fix, but it's long in coming as it's "an design overhaul that takes time to build and test, and then to implement."
For now, Blizzard is taking three steps to make Diablo 2: Resurrected more easily accessible. Rate limiting this will place an upper limit on how fast and frequently players can make and join games; the establishment of a login queue modeled after MMOs to help ensure that servers aren't smashed with a flurry of simultaneous logins; as well as breaking down critical functions into smaller services.
But these steps could end up alienating a section or the Diablo 2: Resurrected player base entirely on their own. Players who reach their the limits on rate, for example they will receive an error message that states there's a problem connecting to game servers.
This isn't that different from the situation they're into today (but it's expected to happen in less frequent intervals and to fewer people), while login queues make it possible for players to endure lengthy waiting periods before being allowed into the game. Both are far better than the current system but will not do much in the way of addressing widespread calls to get rid of these irritating issues.
Blizzard states that it's committed to creating better, long-term solutions.
"We have employees working incredibly hard to manage incidents in real-time, finding issues, and then implementing solutions--not only with the D2R team, but throughout Blizzard," PezRadar said. "This game is so important to everyone.
Many of us have been D2 players all our lives--we played in the initial days of the game back in 2001. Other members are members of the community of modders, and others. We can guarantee you that we'll work until the game feels right for us, not only as developersbut also players and members of the community."
Diablo 2: Resurrected PTR Update Focuses the Class BalancePlayerDiablo 2 fans have been waiting with bated breath awaiting the end of January, as Blizzard is set to release Diablo 2: Resurrected's 2.4 update for the action-RPG's publicly testing realms to test. This is because it's the first official content update and adjustment to the balance Diablo 2 has received since early 2010. This patch 2.4 that is for Diablo 2: Resurrected is currently confirmed to release on PTR starting January 25.
